메루아(MERROIR)는 ‘평온함의 감각’을 공간적으로 구현하는 방식에 대한 프로젝트다. 이 공간은 단순히 기능을 수용하거나 특정 분위기를 연출하는 것에 머무르지 않는다. 오히려 사용자의 감각이 가장 안정된 상태에 도달할 수 있는 환경적 조건을 구축하는 데 집중한다. 프로젝트의 출발점이 된 메루아라는 개념 또한 여기에서 비롯된다. 굴은 주변의 수온과 조류, 암반의 상태와 밀도에 따라 전혀 다른 질감과 풍미를 갖게 된다. 즉, 메루아는 하나의 원물이 가장 좋은 상태로 존재하기 위한 환경 그 자체를 의미한다. 이 프로젝트는 그러한 개념을 건축적 언어로 치환하는 과정에 가깝다.

공간은 사용자의 감각을 점유하기보다 조율하는 방식으로 설계되었다. 빛은 시선을 자극하기보다 감정을 안정시키는 온도로 머물고, 음악은 존재감을 드러내기보다 공간의 호흡을 조율한다. 재료 또한 장식적 제스처로 소비되지 않는다. 모든 요소는 사용자가 음식과 대화, 그리고 머무는 시간 자체에 자연스럽게 몰입할 수 있도록 배경으로 기능한다. 메루아의 디테일은 더하기보다 덜어내는 태도 안에서 형성되며, 이는 공간 전체에 잔잔한 밀도를 만든다.

프로젝트의 중심에는 거대한 호피석 담장이 놓인다. 이 담장은 단순한 조형 장치가 아니라 공간의 흐름과 기능을 조직하는 하나의 지형으로 작동한다. 외부와 내부, 홀과 주방을 구획하는 기능적 경계이면서 동시에 메루아의 정체성을 가장 명확하게 드러내는 건축적 제스처다. 거칠고 묵직한 호피석의 물성은 풍화된 암석의 표면을 연상시키고, 그 주변으로 기능 공간들이 조용히 기대어 배치된다. 이는 바위 표면에 굴이 평온하게 부착되어 살아가는 자연의 풍경에서 출발한 장면이기도 하다.

메루아의 공간 구성은 견고한 하나의 매스와 그 주변에 부착된 기능 공간들 사이의 관계를 통해 완성된다. 사용자의 동선은 과장된 연출보다 자연스러운 흐름 안에서 이어지고, 시선 또한 특정 장면에 집중되기보다 공간 전체의 분위기 안에서 천천히 머무른다. 호피석 담장은 외부에서는 강한 아이덴티티로 인식되지만, 내부에서는 빛을 머금는 배경이 되어 공간의 정서를 조용히 지탱한다. 재료는 본연의 질감과 시간성을 드러내고, 빛은 표면 위를 천천히 이동하며 공간의 밀도를 변화시킨다.

이 프로젝트는 결국 ‘본질적인 상태’에 대한 이야기다. 오늘날 많은 상업 공간들이 강한 시각적 자극과 장식적 연출을 통해 소비된다면, 메루아는 감각의 소음을 줄이는 방식으로 접근한다. 불필요한 요소들을 덜어내고, 사용자가 가장 편안한 상태로 머무를 수 있는 환경을 구축함으로써 공간은 하나의 분위기가 아닌 하나의 상태를 제안하게 된다.

메루아는 형태를 드러내기 위한 공간이 아니라, 감각이 안정되고 본질이 선명해지는 환경에 대한 건축적 해석이다. 단단한 바위와 그 곁에 조용히 자리한 굴처럼, 공간은 과장 없이 존재하며 깊고 잔잔한 인상을 남긴다.

MERROIR is a project that explores how a sense of tranquility can be translated into spatial language. Rather than merely accommodating function or producing a certain atmosphere, the project focuses on constructing environmental conditions in which the user’s senses can settle into their most stable state. The concept of “MERROIR” itself originates from this idea. Oysters develop entirely different textures and flavors depending on surrounding conditions such as water temperature, current, density, and the characteristics of the rock they inhabit. In this sense, MERROIR refers not simply to a place, but to the optimal environment in which a material can exist in its best and most natural state. The project can therefore be understood as an architectural translation of that condition.

The space is designed not to dominate the senses, but to calibrate them. Light remains at a temperature that stabilizes emotion rather than stimulates attention, while sound functions less as a presence and more as a subtle rhythm regulating the atmosphere of the space. Materials are not consumed as decorative gestures. Instead, every element acts as a quiet background that allows the user to naturally immerse themselves in food, conversation, and the experience of time itself. The details within MERROIR are formed through reduction rather than addition, creating a restrained yet deeply layered spatial density.

At the center of the project stands a monumental leopard-patterned stone wall. More than a sculptural object, it operates as a topographical device that organizes both program and movement throughout the space. It functions simultaneously as a boundary between exterior and interior, hall and kitchen, while becoming the primary architectural gesture that defines MERROIR’s identity. The rough and heavy materiality of the stone recalls the surface of weathered rock, around which functional spaces quietly attach themselves. The composition draws from the image of oysters peacefully adhering to the surface of a stone in nature.

The spatial composition of MERROIR is completed through the relationship between this singular solid mass and the functional volumes surrounding it. Movement through the space follows a natural flow rather than a choreographed sequence, allowing the user’s gaze to settle gradually within the atmosphere instead of focusing on singular visual moments. From the exterior, the stone wall acts as a powerful identity marker, while internally it becomes a muted backdrop that quietly sustains the emotional tone of the space. Materials reveal their inherent texture and temporality, while light slowly travels across surfaces, continuously altering the density of the interior throughout the day.

Ultimately, the project is about a return to essential states. In contrast to many contemporary commercial interiors that rely on excessive visual stimulation and decorative expression, MERROIR approaches space through the reduction of sensory noise. By removing unnecessary gestures and constructing an environment where the user can remain in a state of ease, the project proposes not simply a visual atmosphere, but a particular condition of being.

MERROIR is not a space designed to be consumed as an image. It is an architectural interpretation of an environment where the senses settle and essence becomes clear. Like oysters quietly resting against solid stone, the space exists without exaggeration, leaving behind a calm and lasting impression.
