Amplification of Emotion

위스키 바 ‘AMP11’은 1984년 영화 This Is Spinal Tap 속 대사인“This one goes to 11”에서 출발한다.

Amplification of Emotion

The whiskey bar ‘AMP11’ originates from the iconic line,“This one goes to 11,” from the 1984 film This Is Spinal Tap.Just as the amplifier in the film exceeds the conventional limit of volume, the project explores how alcohol and music amplify human emotion through spatial experience.
The project began with the idea of interpreting a whiskey bar not merely as a place for drinking, but as a device that gradually intensifies sensation and atmosphere. Much like an amplifier magnifies sound, alcohol, music, and space act together as mediums that expand emotional states and sensory perception. This concept is articulated throughout the project under the narrative of “Amplification of Emotion.”
The site’s long linear layout became a critical spatial instrument within the design. The process started with formal studies of speaker and amplifier structures, translating their physical and mechanical characteristics into spatial language. Rhythms of compression and expansion, repetition, and directional flow were embedded into the circulation and architectural composition. Rather than borrowing musical imagery superficially, the project attempts to reinterpret the structural language of audio equipment as an immersive spatial experience.
At the core of the space, actual speakers were integrated into the architectural structures themselves, allowing sound to emerge directly from within the built form. Instead of simply placing audio devices inside the interior, the speaker and amplifier structures function simultaneously as architecture and sound-producing elements. As visitors move through the space, sound resonates organically from the embedded structures, creating an immersive condition where visual atmosphere and auditory experience become inseparable.
The exterior façade also derives from the geometry and physical language of amplifiers. Composed of restrained geometric volumes and layered frames, the façade uses depth, shadow, and controlled lighting to evoke the presence of a large-scale audio device. The main entrance becomes one of the project’s most direct conceptual gestures. Rather than using a conventional door handle, the entry system references the tactile operation of an amplifier knob: the handle must be rotated to the left in order to open the door. This detail transforms the act of entering into a performative gesture, as if the user is personally turning AMP11 “up to 11” and activating the amplification of emotion itself.
The sequence from the entrance to the main bar unfolds like a musical track gradually building in intensity. Dark and dense tones, compressed lighting conditions, metallic textures, and repetitive structural frames evoke the sensation of stepping inside a massive amplifier. Around the main bar and back bar areas, structural framing and indirect lighting intersect to generate the project’s central energy.
Throughout the project, there is a consistent interest in creating invisible influence rather than explicit expression. The space does not attempt to directly describe emotion; instead, it amplifies sensory perception through material density, compressed light, reverberating sound, and the subtle distances between people.
AMP11 does not treat musical references as decorative motifs. Instead, it transforms the structure, function, and symbolic idea of the amplifier itself into a fundamental spatial experience, proposing a new sensory narrative within the typology of the whiskey bar.
